Writes to his sister. The men are busy preparing for an inspection, because "they say that the Regt that passes the best inspection will do Provost Guard duty in the city this winter." Damuth has received a pair of suspenders from his family by mail and is glad, reporting that clothing goods are expensive if purchased in camp. Damuth is now receiving twenty-four dollars a month. The night before, Damuth went to the theater to see "the Webb sisters…young but perfect beauties." Going to the theater is a good pastime for soldiers, he argues, because "we see again a little civile life."…

Writes to his sister. Damuth has visited a friend from home stationed nearby. The friend is married to a girl who cooks for the army. Of the visit, Damuth writes, "that day was the first time I had sat down to a table with a woman since I ate dinner at home the day I left fer the last time I hardly knew how to act or handle my knife and fork." Writes that he has news of Southerners fighting amongst themselves about states rights. Blanchard writes to Mary Wright from camp on the Mississippi River. Mentions the levee was cut and submerged the whole country around it, sweeping away many homes and forcing people to flee to higher ground. Reports visits from Union Generals Lorenzo Thomas, John A. Logan and James B. McPherson to explain the President's policy on contrabands: fugitive slaves seeking protection behind Union Lines during the southern invasion. Claims "...within a month there will be more than 20,000 in this department alone in arms for the Union and their liberties." Encloses a yellow rose.

"Army Correspondence" includes several letters from soldiers. An editorial examines the topic of "Death," while another short article titled "Last Words" discusses a soldier's last words and actions. "Secular News" includes a report that 200 Negro soldiers were hung by Confederate troops: the editors comment, "Better hang the white officers and put the negroes to work." Additional reports in this section include a skirmish at Culpepper Court House and developments at Port Hudson amongst others.

"'Heavenly Recognition' Again" responds to an article in the previous issue. An article written by a woman describes the local "Flowers." An article encourages the "Support of Ministers." Part of an editorial titled "Our Olio" states that slaves have been trained into insubordination and that they should be kept in their place "as an inferior race." "Secular News" includes reports that Europe will not recoignize the Confederacy, whites are rioting against Negroes in Detroit and other cities, and Penscola is being evacuated by Yankees "and their sable comrades," amongst other reports.
