Document guarantees the Union Navy that there will be no hostilities or political intrigue while the Confederates are confined to the Union ship. Has 18 signatures, including the Commander William A. Webb, William McBlair, etc. The "Atlanta," captured in June of 1863, was the first Confederate ironclad to surrender to the Union. Webb was roundly criticized for waging action against orders. He later commanded the CSS "Richmond."

Written on letterhead of the U.S. Flag Ship "Minnesota." Written by Acting Rear Admiral Lee as Commander of the North Atlantic Blockade Squadron to Commander Patterson of the USS "James Adger." Lee says he has been instructed by telegraph that Major General John Dix will receive the captured crew of the CSS "Atlanta" that are currently on board the "James Adger." Tells him to proceed to Fortress Monroe, Virginia to drop them off. He is to drop off the officers of the "Atlanta" in New York at Fort Lafayette though. From Commander Reynolds of the USS "Vermont" to Commander Patterson of the USS "James Adger." By order of Rear Admiral Samuel F. DuPont, Reynolds sends officers and crew of the captured CSS "Atlanta" to the "James Adger." Says a list is enclosed (see GLC01007.05). Reynolds adds a short note saying six of the wounded men as well as the ship's surgeon and hospital steward remain on the "Vermont" and that their names are not on the list. Written on blue paper. Reynolds was promoted to rear admiral in 1873.

Writes from Mt. Holly, a present day township in Burlington County, New Jersey. Inquires about the condition of his son, Thomas, about whom he has received contradictory reports. Says he traveled to Washington, D. C. to obtain information and spoke with an officer from his son's regiment. The officer told him that his son had been taken prisoner, but could not say whether or not he was wounded. States it has been four weeks since his son was last seen on the field and there has been no mention of his name in any of the army lists. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Writes that his company was sent to Washington with prisoners, while he and three other men were sent to New York with more prisoners. While in New York, he was able to go home for two days, where he found his family in good health. Describes his journey to Brattleboro, Vermont, and life in his camp just outside the town. Says duty is not hard, because no troops are stationed there as of yet. Notes he is waiting to be paid, which will take a while because they do not have a paymaster. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner. Envelope includes a three stamp.

Writes from Camp Chemung known as Elmira. He is glad that both Ogden and her family are healthy after the "rebel raid in Pa." His regiment has been stationed in Vermont, guarding Rebel prisoners, for the last few months. Says plans to send the regiment to Washington fell through because the State militia detailed to take over guard duty consisted mainly of young boys incapable of controlling the prisoners. Explains that there are 8,000 prisoners or more being housed in his regiment's old barracks. Informs Ogden that the regiment will probably stay in Vermont because the time is almost over…

Writes from Mt. Holly, a present day township in Burlington County, New Jersey. Informs Ogden his son was wounded and taken prisoner. Notes he obtained this information from a soldier who was captured at the same time. The soldier said that Thomas's wound had been treated. This information was confirmed in a letter received on 4 July from Dr. Armstrong of the 5th New York Cavalry, a fellow prisoner who, like Thomas, was being treated at Libby Prison Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. In a postscript, Ekings informs Ogden of the doctor's opinion on his son's wound.

Reflects on the many lost lives of "noble fellows" and thanks God for sparing him during the Battle of Gettysburg. Writes he was wounded and taken prisoner on 8 May at Spotsylvania, Virginia. Says he was shot in the left knee, but the bone was not hit. He was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, and escaped on the first of July, but was soon recaptured and sent to Macon, Georgia. He was then transported to a jail in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was offered parole and removed to the Roper Hospital. He is in good health, and states, "no bad effects resulted from my wound."

Notes his company has changed its name to Company D, 16th Regiment. Says he is presently on duty in Chambersburg, where he is being quartered in comfortable barracks. Notes eighteen Rebels were brought in, but are going to be sent to Fort Delaware. Some of the men were thought to be spies, and were sent to jail. Requests that Ogden send him a couple of undershirts, in the care of the bearer of this letter, as his were stolen from his knapsack. Written on "Head Quarters Provost Marshal..." stationery.

Writes to "Madam," likely referring to Sarah Ogden based on content. Writes he has been "continually scouting the country between Richmond and Williamsburg." States they have only had occasional skirmishes with the enemy. Notes the eleventh cavalry has been helping Union prisoners and refugees escape "the tyranny of rebeldom." Tells Ogden about an expedition to avenge the death of Colonel Dalgreen. Also reports on the Rebels' mistreatment of captured officers of General Hugh Kilpatrick's command.
