In regard to the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania, she notes that "The insurgents in the back country has carr[i]ed matter[s] so high that the President has been obliged to send a larg[e] body of men to settle the matter."

This collection consists exclusively of correspondence from Daniel G. Winegar, to his wife Elvira in Belvidere, Ill. Winegar enlisted as a private in August 1862, and was mustered into Co. "B" of the 95th Illinois infantry in September of that year. As these letters indicate, his service took him to Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, with the largest concentration being in Vicksburg. These letters bear witness to the siege of that city, as well as the Battle of Franklin, and capture of Mobile. This document explicates the taxes to be imposed on spirits within the United States. These excise taxes sparked the Whiskey Rebellion. Approved specifically by George Washington, as President, John Adams, as Vice President, and Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, as Speaker of the House of Respresentatives. Partly printed document signed by Clymer as Supervisor of the Revenue for the district of Pennsylvania attests that the duties had been paid on "one Puncheon of Rum containing one hundred & fifteen gallons..." Marked "No. 3294." Clymer served as Pennsylvania's collector of excise taxes from 1791-1794, and was in the post when the Whiskey Rebellion broke out in western Pennsylvania.

Document consists of two pages, one appears to be a corner fragment of a full size page and the other appears to be the reverse shape and is missing a corner fragment.
