Joseph had not heard from Wilmor in over a month. Many people in the neighborhood have been getting married, though no one in his family has, and he imagines that "God's command to Noah 'to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth' is about being speedily fulfilled." He believes that "our recent glorious victories at Somerset, Fort Henry, and Roanoke Island" must make the "soldiers about Washington feel in fighting mood just now." He expects that Wilmor and his company must be "eager to make a dash at the Rebels and gain a little glory too."

Joseph's division is close to the Confederate forts which have fired at the camp but have not hit anyone yet. The soldiers "holler[e]d over to them if they co[ul]d not dew any better than that they had better quit." They are two miles of Yorktown where "Cornwallis gave oup [up] his sword to Washington." Wilmor has heard that "the battle of yesterday is in our favor…our men took 1300 prisoners and 18 army wagons [but] it may not be true." He was only given "a pair of shoes a gunn a flanel shirt a pair of drawers." His camp moved so that is just half a mile from the capitol. He lightheartedly describes the goats nearby, wishing he could send one "by mail to you." The firing he heard earlier was a skirmish, "the rebbles wer[e] drove back" but "we lost 6 men."

Wilmor reports that "Niggerdom is a question that is talked over in camp verry much." The men think Congress had better find a way to pay the soldiers at the appointed times. He describes their line of defense, which is within a mile of the Confederates, on "the same ground that Washington had his armey on before the sur[r]ender of Cornwallis." He thinks the Confederates will be surprised when the Union cannons "open the[i]r mouthes an[d] begin to bark at them think of 2000 ball[s] an[d] shells per minut[e]" flying through the air. Charles has been wounded. He intended to visit Wilmor on his way to see his brother Joseph E. but was unable to. Joseph E. is now three miles south of Harpers Ferry. Samuel asks Wilmor's opinion of the removal of McClellan from the command of the Army of the Potomac, but reserves his own judgment stating that "time will test the matter wither for good or for ill." He prays that peace will be "reestablished on the ruins of Southern Secession."

Wilmor's regiment is leaving Camp Johnston. He heard the Confederates "talking and whistling yankee doodle" on picket last night. The 63rd lost three men and one was wounded because Colonel Morgan thought the Confederates were "new york boys" when they passed through his ambush and did not fire on them. Wilmor still trusts Morgan but says that Berrenger is "the boy" and "he would have shot all the rebles." The little tents they carry on their backs make them look like "land turtles."

Wilmor describes a confrontation near three Confederate forts. The Confederates nearly surrounded them and fired rifles and muskets, creating a "shower of balls mixed with grape an[d] shell" but they retreated and "lost not a man." He declares "It is not hard work so long as a person dont git hurt." Written at Camp McClellan.

Wilmor is not sure whether Jesse went to Philadelphia or not but assures them that "god will shield us in the day of Battle." He describes the recent Battle of Fair Oaks, whose battlefield "was the most terrifying place I ever seen the dead lay thick." He claims the Confederates meant to take them all prisoner and "a heap of the nobility came out too see us runn." He has heard that the Confederate soldiers are tired and that they had to "force the North Carolina troops too fight they don't know that the state has returned too the union an[d] called her Troops home."

His right leg is getting worse. He believes Lee may attack them near Alexandria. The regiment now totals 343 men out of the 984 men who enlisted one year ago. In a section addressed to his wife, Smith indicates someone wrote him a note, on one of Charley's letters, requesting money. He is not sure she wrote the note but will send her money any way. He writes that he will have to go to the hospital.
