T he Gilder Lehrman Institute sponsors the Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program for college students, and the Civil War Essay Contest and the Gilder Lehrman Prize in American History for high school students, the History Teacher of the Year Award, as well as other awards. These encourage academic excellence in American history at the secondary and collegiate level.



Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Award is a national competition sponsored by Preserve America, a White House initiative, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program

In this program for college students, History Scholars are awarded stipends to come to New York City for six weeks in the summer to engage in research projects under the guidance of leading historians.
