To celebrate the launch of Gilder Lehrman’s new website, we at History Now thought it appropriate to provide readers with a special, expanded issue. We chose for our topic one of the central themes in our national history: the causes and consequences of war. We asked eleven leading historians to explore the ways in which our society has been shaped and reshaped by battlefield conflicts and by the political, technological, and social changes that these conflicts bring in their wake.
