George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876) was an American cavalry officer who fought in the Civil War and, later, against American Indians on the plains. Custer earned a reputation as a fearless Union commander during the Civil War, and he took part in the First Battle of Bull Run as well as the Virginia and Gettsysburg campaigns. In 1866, he was appointed lieutenant colonel of the Seventh Cavalry and sent west to help put down the Indians of the Great Plains. Custer soon became widely known as an Indian fighter.  In 1868, he led an attack against Cheyenne Indians at the Washita River in which women and children were killed. In 1876, he fought his final battle at Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory. There, Custer led his 200 soldiers into battle against a force of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, but the poorly planned attack was a failure, and Custer and all of his men were killed.
