Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Georgia Governor Rabun that Obediah Wright, whom Davis arrested for massacring Chehaw Indians, has been released through a writ of habeas corpus. Requests that Rabun have Wright returned to his custody. The Chehaw were American allies in the first Seminole War. After the massacre, Jackson sent Davis to arrest Wright, who had been a member of the Georgia militia.
