Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is a copy of The Massachussetts Centinel. The newspaper contains a short article concerning the ratification of the Constitution by North Carolina, headed by a woodcut cartoon of all the states, as pillars, in place, except Rhode Island. Another article criticizes Rhode Island. Another notes that people fond of the number thirteen might see Vermont brought in to reach that number. News from London, other foreign locales, and from places around the United States. Also contains ship news and advertisements.
