For thirty-five shillings sterling, Smith was granted 343 acres of land, the borders of which are described. With state seal. Printed document, partially filled in by hand, signed as Governor of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson Esq; Governour of the commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom there presents shall come greeting: KNOW YE that in consideration of the ancient Composition of Thirty five shillings sterling paid Josiah Smith into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said commonwealth unto the said Josiah Smith a certain tract or parcel of land containing three hundred and forty-three acres survey bearing date the 14th day of april 1780 lying and being <in> the County of Henry on Mayo River and bounded as follows <to> wit, Beginning at Jordains Corner red oak thence new lines north sixteen degrees east one hundred and seventy eight poles to a Chestnut tree. North forty three and a half degrees west forty four poles to a red oak south fifty eight degrees west one hundred and four <poles> south forty three degrees west one hundred and ninety two<,***> west fifty eight poles to a pine south thirty one degrees west forty nine poles to a pine south twenty Six and a half degrees east fifty nine poles to a white oak south Sixty five degrees east twenty two poles to a Chestnut tree North fifty seven degrees east Sixty four poles crossing aforesaid river to pointers [?] on Jourdans line thence with his line North Eq3p° [?] his corner hickory thence with the said Jordans line to the first station with its appurtenances; to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its appurtenances, to the said Josiah Smith. -- and his heirs forever.
