At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A personal letter to Acheson, then secretary of state. Responding to a letter of Acheson dated 28 March and enclosing a copy of his previous day's press conference. Mentions Michigan Senator Arthur Vandenberg and Henry Stimson as arguing from the same position on an issue as Acheson, and castigates Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy as a pathological liar and Nebraska Senator Kenneth Wherry as a blockheaded undertaker. On White House stationery.
