The document has water damage with losses to the text at center left, and with two small losses in the closing.

Notes: Not in Boyd vol. 3. In his own hand Jefferson has added the day of the month at top, and the complimentary close. Text losses are supplied in angled brackets, when decipherable. The recipients' names have been lost from the address leaf. The place names do not appear to be currently used in Virginia, West Virginia or Kentucky.

It having been reported impracticable for want of provisions to carry into execution the expedition proposed against the indians the executive have adopted the defensive plan which you will find explained in the within advice of council. As you will readily collect from that the part of it which is to be carried into execution by your county. I have only to desire that you will immediately take measures for executing your part as circumstance may render it proper for the men from different countries to move together. I would recommend to you a correspondence with the lieutenants of the other counties, connected in measures, with yours. Powder & some lead <will> be sent by colo Crocket and more of the latter article by an acco<unt?> immediately from the lead mines in Kentucky, to be deliver<ed to com>manding officers of the several posts in the following <counties?>
