At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Conner writes to Nueal: "I don't guess you can read this for I cut my thumb on a tin can and I can't write much tho it's about well now." He says that he is glad to hear that Nathan is back at work now. Conner expresses how much he wishes he could be back working. He asks Nueal to tell Lola Jane that "uncle Herbert wants her to hurry up and write that letter that she was talking about, Ha." He writes that since "space is scarce and I can't write anyway I'll close for this time."
