Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hettie (also spelled Hetty) Chippie is listed as President and Mrs. Major Williams as Vice President. Organized to tend to sick and wounded Union soldiers, and to be connected to the Women's Pennsylvania Branch of the United States Sanitary Commission. Includes a list of medical supplies. Contains a preamble declaring "We a number of Colored Ladies of Philadelphia deeming it to be our duty to furnish our brethrin in arms when sick & wounded ... " Establishes offices, duties, meeting times, and requirements for dues paid to the society. Lists the names of the society's members and board of directors.
