Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two scrapbooks with 2133 covers and some broadsides pasted in. Containing many unusual Union covers, a number of which are rare and unlisted in Wolcott. Scarce designs from printers such as Magnus, Berlin & Jones, etc., with single, tonal or multicolor designs. Includes four 1864 presidential tickets. The first volume includes: Magnus multi-color state seal designs on pp. 13-15 and 29-32, and 81-84; the matched set of five Lincoln-Davis Price Fight covers, p. 21; alligator design, p. 35; Berlin and Jones design, p. 56; Southern design (printed in North), p. 57-62; Uncle Sam's farm series, p. 10; hanging Jefferson Davis, p 94; Magnus violet and green designs, pp. 110-131; the Lament series of 7 covers, p.133; Magnus bronze series, pp. 181-2; and many others. The second volume includes several rare designs on p.1 and p. 28; Magnus multi-color state seals on pp. 3,5,7, 9; rare Berlin & Jones covers on p.31.
