At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by H. L. Scott. Docket reads "General Order, No. 297, Sept. 24th 1847, Deference to be paid to Religious ceremonies. Distribution of knives to thieves and murderers. Measures taken to secure the Leaders." Prohibits the interruption of processions and asks Protestants to respect Catholic ceremonies. Announces that released convicts have been outfitted with weapons to assassinate drunk soldiers. Originally numbered as 296, struck and replaced with 297 by Scott.
