At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes international news from various overseas newspapers. Humorous odes and papers about prominent British and French figures printed. Domestic news and classified ads inhabit pages 2 through 4. Section reserved for announcing the indentured servitude of residents and the return of runaway slaves.

Continues "The Universal instructor in all arts and sciences, and Pennsylvania gazette." Issues have a subtitle, "Containing the freshest advices, foreign and domestick." Suspended publication at Philadelphia with the issue of Sept. 10, 1777, upon the arrival of the British troops. Published at York, Pa., Dec. 20, 1777-June 20, 1778.
