Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his parents to relay that he is in good health. Implores them to arrange for his release from his duty as a soldier, fearing that if he does not return home soon he will lose his trade. Also notes an Indian attack on Casco Fort. Written from Casco Fort during Queen Anne's War.
