At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dr. Abbot gives an account of Mrs. Wilson's health, indicating that he believes she will live until Mr. Wilson returns from Washington, D.C at the end of the congressional session. This letter was originally sent to the Massachusetts congressman John Wilson, then enclosed by Wilson in a letter to Aaron Hobart (see GLC06313.059)

John Wilson was a Massachusetts congressman, elected as a federalist to the Thirteenth Congress (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1815)and the Fifteenth Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1819).
