Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cruger writes that he plans to sail for the coast of Guinea in three weeks, and that he would like to see Robert and his family. He also informs Robert of the death of Coll. Prevoost.

This with my Sincere Regards to you Comes to Acquaint you that I am Design'd in about three weeks time to Saile for the Coast of Guinea in the Sloop Ann and Jacob Moon Junr: is to go our Doctor -
Percy Self as well as ye: Rest of our family, would be Extreem Glad to See you in Town therefor[e] I Desire you by no means Omitt Smith Coming to Spend ye: Holydays with us for I believe Shall not See you - again in Some time -
Doupt not but you have heard the Surprising news of the [inserted: sudden] Death of Coll: Prevoost who was Verry well over night & was found next Morning Dead in his bed - I have not anything more to add at present but would be verry Glad of your Company that I might have [strikeout] an opportunity of Serving you & P Something more then word to Assure you that I am your obliging Neaphew And Well wisher
