Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter was written by John Nanfan, Abraham de Peyster, S. Staats, Robert Walters, Thomas Weaver, and William Attwood. They inform the Lords of Trade that they have discovered and investigated a conspiracy to defame the government, led by Nicholas Bayard. P.2 contains a second letter from 21 January 1702, in which the authors encourage the Lords of Trade to make and example of Nicholas Bayard. Docketed on verso.
