Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dr. General,
Some days since I applied to the Governor for an extract of a Letter which he wrote when Presidt. of Congress - I called on him today but his Secretary had been inattentive and I did not obtain it - will you remind him of my request, and receive the Extract when he has authenticated it -
