Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Jay, President of Congress, writes "The Bravery & Spirit of enterprize you have on frequent occasions displayed in the service of your Country justly entitle you to the honour done you by the enclosed Act of Congress of the 17th Inst."

Talbot commanded the sloop Argo in 1779, which patrolled the Long Island Sound and beyond. Talbot was noted by Congress for his success during the Revolutionary War in taking many British prizes. Talbot received a commission as captain in the Continental Navy 17 September 1779.
