At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cosigned by Christopher Robinson and Silas Helme as witnesses. Legal document signed by James Perry Jr. that he received 635 pounds, 5 shillings and "One Negro Girl Named Lucy" from William Potter, the executor of the estate of Perry's mother Marcy Potter. Also says that he received his daughter Mary Perry's part of the inheritance as her natural guardian. Red wax seal next to James Perry's signature.

Have Received of William Potter Executor to of Last Will and testament of his Honard mother Marcy Potter late of [S] Town [widow] [Received] the Legacy given in s'd Dec. Last Will and testament to my Daughter Marcy Perry. One Negro Girl Named Lucy And also Five hundred pounds old Tenor-Together with & interest on a sum of whole amounting to this Day to Six hundred & Thirty five pounds five shilling, which sum of 635:5:1 & 1 Negro Girl I acknowledge to have rec'd for & in bhalf of my Daughter in full for her Legacy in my s'd Capacity as Natural Guardian to my Daughter Marcy Perry.
