At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother about a chat he had with Senator John F. Kennedy. Dave had mentioned Sam in their conversation and Kennedy remembered him from the previous summer. Kennedy commented on his namesake, Sam Houston, being featured in his book "Profiles in Courage." They talked about Houston and inscribed a book to Sam, which Dave was sending to him from Washington. Written on stationary of the United States Senate.

At the time of this writing, Dave Allred was a reporter for the Wichita Falls, Texas, newspaper. In 1966, he was elected as the 13th District Representative in the Texas state legislature, where he served for fourteen years.
