Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Stoddard, being entrusted with Gilbert Livingston's education, writes to assuage the parents of his intentions. Stoddard writes that "I shall take the same [care] of him as if he were my own: & see that he doe carefully impour his time: the young man has a promising countenance." Docketed on address leaf.
