Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "42. Naval Chief" depicting a portrait of Forrest P. Sherman decorated with four stars and a large ship in the background. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative attributing naval successes during the Korean War to the Chief of Naval Operations. Text also mentions other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Forrest P. Sherman was the youngest U.S. Navy admiral to serve as Chief of Naval Operations. He oversaw the conflict between the Korean War and the Cold War.
