At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the letter, Augsberger speaks about the first time he met Ardena. He says, "I wanted to kiss you the first time I saw you...the first time I saw you I fell in love with you." He also requests something of her. He writes, "Darling would you become a Catholic for me? That would make me so very happy. To know you did for me." He says he will wait for an answer from her. Augsberger sends his love and closes the letter.
