Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain in the 8th Regiment Iowa Infantry, earlier taken prisoner at Shiloh and later paroled: "My vengeful feelings are the hardest to keep down, when thinking of those in the free North, who would prefer giving up to that Tyrant, Jeff. Davis who is trying to establish a government the corner stone of which is oppression....We…are fighting…for the principles that are, or ought to be, dearer than life, Liberty, Freedom from the oppression of the basest of tyrants."
