Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Attack on Fredericksburgh-Dec. 1862" dated 1863. Depicts a scene from the Battle of Fredericksburgh, December 11-15, 1862. In the forefront of the image, Union forces use boats and pontoon bridges to cross a river into Fredericksburg. engraved after an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in the possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
