Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes he is now in Gillisonville at work. He likes the power but enjoys going home every week and being a subordinate in his parent's house. Comments on a dance he attended in Gillisonville which he enjoyed even though he did not know many. Describes using corporal punishment on his boys. Mentions Emmeline Colcock. Asks Charley how it is being a senior at college. States Marion went to Charleston to live with William Colcock. Hutson graduated from South Carolina College in 1859. He was engaged to Emmeline Colcock before he entered service but she died in 1861.
