Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seeking reimbursement for an advance. On the verso of the letter there is a draft, also in Clymer's hand, of an unrelated document; it seems he was just reusing this paper to send his letter to the commissioners and that the scrap of autograph text on the verso is to be ignored.
