Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This collection consists largely of correspondence and legal documents pertaining to Native Americans, particularly the Cherokee Nation. Topics include despoiled property (#9, 17, and 18); compensation (#6, 7, 8, and 21); the Treaty of 1805 (#11); and slaves (#2 and 3). Individuals who figure prominently into these papers include Return J. Meigs, A. (Andrew?) Jackson, John Riley, and Native Americans, such as Bird Doublehead, Leaf Doublehead, and Black Fox.
