Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wirz's hanging is not mentioned but the date of admission is 10 November 1865, the day he was hanged at the Old Capital Prison. Small yellow printed card. The name of the bearer has been scratched out.

Captain Henry Wirz was the commandant of Andersonville Prison; he was tried and executed for war crimes in 1865.
