Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Garfield to Ayers saying that Garfield would be glad to have Ayers and his men join his regiment. also that he would make it a point to write to Ayers aunt Maria soon and that the only reason he hasn't in a while it that he was away for the last few weeks.
