Writes from Camp Chemung known as Elmira. He is glad that both Ogden and her family are healthy after the "rebel raid in Pa." His regiment has been stationed in Vermont, guarding Rebel prisoners, for the last few months. Says plans to send the regiment to Washington fell through because the State militia detailed to take over guard duty consisted mainly of young boys incapable of controlling the prisoners. Explains that there are 8,000 prisoners or more being housed in his regiment's old barracks. Informs Ogden that the regiment will probably stay in Vermont because the time is almost over for many of the boys. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Sarah Perot Ogden was a Quaker from Philadelphia who took part in variety of philanthropic works such as assisting the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Philadelphia Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and President of the Philadelphia Home for Incurables. Both Ogden and her husband, Edward H. Ogden, were strong supporters of the Union cause. During the Civil War Ogden volunteered in a military hospital where she made daily visits. Her husband served as a Union soldier.
