Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Returns a pamphlet on weights and measures (not present) and thanks him for loaning it. Mentions that he is looking forward to sending his own pamphlet on the same subject to Mease.

Mease was a doctor who is best known for his writings, Picture of Philadelphia, and a Geological Account of the United States, 1807, which was among the earliest geological treatises written by an American.
