At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Timothy White and LeRoy Edwards. Other endorsements include that of J. E. Smith, Surgeon Pacs and V.O Cassell of the Jackson Light Artillery. Officially relieves Logan Hurst of service to the Confederate States Army after having found a suitable substitute. Certifies Timothy White was paid $1000 in cash by Logan Hurst to serve as a substitute.

Timothy White enlisted as a private on 4 May 1862 at Norfolk County, Virginia. He mustered into VA Cassell's Heavy Artillery and was transferred out on circa 15 June 1862. On 15 June 1862 he transferred into "D" Co. VA 7th Battalion and was transferred out on 8 August 1862. On 8 August 1862 he mustered as a substitute into "D" Co. VA 61st Infantry. Logan Hurst died on 20 January 1864 at Orange Court House, Virginia.
