At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed with notation by Hancock beginning "A correct extract of my official report." Reports on subordinate officers meriting praise for their action at the Battle of Garnett Hill, including General W.T.H. Brooks. At this brief engagement, Hancock met and repulsed an attack by Robert Toombs and the Georgia troops, and held this position until near the close of the day. The official copy of the report was sent to Leonard D. H. Currie.

Winfield Scott Hancock was a Union General, commanded the II Corps for much of the war. Unsuccessful candidate for President in 1880.
Leonard D. H. Currie was a colonel in the 133 New York Infantry. Served as Assistant Adjutant General, Smith Division.
