Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fannin receives $2800 in payment from J. F. Perry for the purchase of five slaves "African Negroes": Billy, John, Joe, Peter, and Betcey.

James Walker Fannin, Jr., a slave trader and Texas revolutionary leader, was killed by Santa Anna in the 1836 Goliad massacre. James Franklin Perry (1790-1853), a Texas planter and revolutionary leader, was Stephen Austin’s brother-in-law and close confidante.
