Dear Mother
Since writing you from McMinville our cavalry have been constantly on the move. At Sparta our Brigade had a little fight with the Rebs in which the Brigade had sixteen wounded - four from our Regiment at that place the head of our Regiment met with a narrow escape - our regiment was following the creek down to find the enemy and the head of the column had advanced onto a little knoll when two terrific volleys were poured into us. We immediately about-faced and found protection behind the knoll but one horse was wounded and our escape was almost miraculous. The bullets flew around and over us in every direction but did no further damage than to wound one horse. Our men were dismounted and lay behind the bank and exchanged shots with them some of our men took shelter behind stumps and ? ? the knoll. I was one, rifle in hand behind a stump firing at them.
