At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports activities of the 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac. Mentions Confederate and Union troop locations and actions. Refers to specific commanders, including Generals George Gordon Meade, John Sedgwick, and Alexander Schimmelfennig. Writes "I believe the Corps successfully Executed every order of the Commanding General of the Army. Sometimes the marches were long and tedious but they were always performed with cheerfulness and very little struggling case be laid to our Charge. I feel grateful to the officers and men of th[?] Corps for the part they have done in this eventful campaign, and whatever misrepresentation or prejudice may have let against them they nevertheless deserve the gratitude of their country."
