Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry writes to Bishop Hunt to congratulate him on his address given at the South Bend colloquy. He also discusses ordering the four volumes of "God, Revelation and Authority" and the need of spreading the Christian Gospel. As Hunt requested, he encloses a requested quotation (GLC05508.125.02).
