Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Half length portrait of Grant with one star. 9th plate. Possibly a second or later generation image. Descriptive tag reads: "Ferrotype of Gen. Grant circa Civil War period." CASE: Union case with cannon and pyramid of cannonballs in front of a tent and U.S. flag. (See Clifford & Michele Krainik, Union Cases, #368.) Case thickness 2.2 cm.
