Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thickness of mount and gilding on edges of mount suggests publication date (1880's-1890's). Ink inscription on verso "944" "A. Johnson. Brig Gen. U. S. Vols. Military Governor of Tenn." Photographers imprint on verso: "Alex Hesler 70 State Street Chicago Negative No _______ Duplicates can be had at any time at reduced rates."
