Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title from graphite inscription on recto. Marked "1" in the upper left corner. Extensive graphite annotations on recto note names of buildings, location of a ravine which Confederates charged up, apple trees etc.. Also, a map of the area has been sketched at the top of the mount. On bluish-gray mount.
