Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Negative by J. Gardner. From Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook, Vol II. No.51" with text accompanying panel. Also includes text description page. The pontoon bridge in the photograph is located either at Weyanoke Point or Powhattan Point, near Harrison's Landing, VA. The bridge was constructed on the 14 June 1864. A few sailing vessels are visible on the river, while soldiers populate the bridge itself.
