Whittier declines an invitation to a religious festival because it coincides with the Quarterly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) at Amesbury, Massachusetts. He discusses schisms within his correspondent's religious community, particularly the debate over predestination.

Notes: The original cataloger marked down Sallie E. Bickford as the recipient, stating that the name was inferred from provenance. I could not verify this.
