Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses personal affairs, his good health, and his wish for clothes.
Notes the Union will "will meet a sad fait for we have a bout 115 or 120 Guns on the Bank of the River" in addition to the Confederate fleet. Also mentions he has heard that conscripts have to report for duty soon.
