Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at "Stoneman's Siding." Colonel Rice writes from Headquarters of the 44th Regiment, New York Volunteers. Rice requests a leave of absence for five days to visit Baltimore, Maryland, "to procure colored servants for my own use which I very much need." Possibly to Frank M. Kelly, Acting Assistant Adjutant General.

Rice was promoted Brigadier General of Volunteers in August 1863.
